The Difference Between Rockets, Cakes, and Roman Candles Explained
When it comes to fireworks, the sheer variety available can be overwhelming — especially for those planning a display for the first time. Whether you’re organising a Bonfire Night party, a wedding celebration, a New Year’s Eve gathering or a private garden display, understanding the types of fireworks you’re buying is crucial for both safety and performance.
Three of the most popular and widely used firework types are rockets, cakes, and Roman candles. Each brings a unique visual effect and style to a firework display, and knowing the difference between them will help you build a better, more balanced show.
In this blog post, we’ll break down exactly what sets rockets, cakes, and Roman candles apart, including how they work, their visual characteristics, and the best ways to use them in your celebration.
What Are Rocket Fireworks?
Overview:
Rockets are one of the most iconic and traditional types of fireworks, known for their high-flying effects and powerful bursts in the sky. They are often the centrepiece of a display, delivering both height and spectacle.
How They Work:
Each rocket is made up of a long stick (used for stabilisation), a motor or lift charge (to propel the rocket into the sky), and a payload (which contains the visual effect, such as stars, bursts or crackles). When ignited, the rocket launches vertically, and once it reaches a certain altitude, the payload explodes into a colourful aerial display.
Visual Effects:
- Starbursts
- Peony and chrysanthemum shapes
- Crackling palms
- Whistling trails
- Coloured comets and glitter
When to Use:
Rockets are great for adding variety and dramatic flair to your firework show. Because of their trajectory and height, they’re best suited for open outdoor spaces where there’s no risk of trees or buildings blocking the flight path. They’re often used as a display opener or finale piece.
Pros:
- Impressive height and burst
- Loud, dramatic effects
- Variety of aerial visuals
Cons:
- Require plenty of clearance
- Can drift depending on wind conditions
- Usually sold individually

What Are Firework Cakes?
Overview:
Cakes (also known as barrages or multi-shot fireworks) are arguably the most popular firework type for both consumer and professional displays. They consist of multiple tubes (each functioning like a small Roman candle) fused together and fired in sequence from a single ignition.
How They Work:
Once lit, cakes automatically fire a sequence of effects in rapid succession. They contain a single fuse that ignites all the internal shots in a pre-set order. The number of shots can range from a handful to well over 100, making cakes ideal for extended, uninterrupted visual performances.
Visual Effects:
- Multiple shot patterns
- Mixed colours and sound effects
- Fanned or angled bursts
- Effects similar to rockets and Roman candles
- Loud reports, crackles, and strobes
When to Use:
Cakes are extremely versatile and can be used as a standalone firework or as the main structure of a display. With a variety of sizes and shot counts available, they can fit into any event, from small garden parties to large public shows.
Pros:
- One ignition, multiple effects
- Minimal setup required
- Available in quiet or loud varieties
- Wide range of patterns and effects
Cons:
- Heavier than other fireworks
- May need secure placement or staking
- More expensive than single-effect items

What Are Roman Candles?
Overview:
Roman candles are a traditional firework type that shoot a series of coloured stars or effects from a single tube at regular intervals. Although they’ve been used in displays for centuries, they remain a popular addition due to their simplicity and effectiveness.
How They Work:
A Roman candle contains a long cardboard tube packed with a series of separate lift charges and effects. When ignited, the firework shoots each effect into the sky one at a time, creating a rhythmic visual pattern. Typically, Roman candles fire between 5 to 10 shots.
Visual Effects:
- Coloured stars
- Pearls and comets
- Crackling tails
- Glitter effects
- Some can include small bursts or reports
When to Use:
Roman candles are often used to add rhythm and flow to a firework display. They’re particularly effective when set off in pairs or groups, either fired in unison or staggered for dramatic effect. However, they do require careful placement and spacing to ensure safety.
Pros:
- Great for timing and pacing
- Controlled, rhythmic bursts
- Classic firework look
Cons:
- Lower elevation compared to rockets
- Fewer shots than cakes
- Not suitable for handheld use

Choosing the Right Fireworks for Your Display
Each firework type offers unique benefits and is best suited to specific parts of a display:
- Rockets create an instant wow factor with their sky-high bursts and are perfect for adding height and drama.
- Cakes offer variety and duration, making them ideal for the core of your display or as a one-ignition finale.
- Roman candles provide a steady tempo and are great for sequencing and visual layering.
A well-balanced firework display usually includes a mix of all three. By combining their strengths, you can build a dynamic show that keeps your audience engaged from start to finish. For example:
- Start with a few Roman candles to create anticipation.
- Build into cakes for rhythm and variety.
- Finish with rockets for a powerful, sky-filling climax.
Safety Tips When Using Rockets, Cakes, and Roman Candles
Regardless of the type of firework you’re using, always follow UK safety regulations and manufacturer instructions. Here are a few general safety tips:
- Only buy CE-certified fireworks from reputable sellers.
- Always use fireworks in open outdoor spaces with enough clearance.
- Secure cakes and Roman candles with stakes or boards to prevent tipping.
- Light fireworks at arm’s length using a safety lighter or portfire.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies.
- Never return to a firework once lit, even if it doesn’t go off.
